VU Structure

VU offers internationally recognised qualifications ranging from certificates and diplomas through to higher education degrees, postgraduate masters programs and doctoral research degrees (PhD).

Seven academic colleges focusing on a range of qualification levels in specific broad discipline area replaced the university's faculty system in 2013.

  • The College of Arts offers a range of pre-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate courses and conducts world-class research in arts, cultural studies, communication, community development, creative arts and industries, psychology, social science and social work.
  • The College of Business has extensive networks of international partnerships making it one of the largest and most progressive business schools in Australia. Training is provided across various areas including business, management, accounting, finance and human resources. It also has ties with professional organisations and conducts research at its associated centres: the Centre for Tourism and Services Research and the Centre for Strategic Economic Studies.
  • The College of Engineering and Science offers architectural, building, civil, mechanical, electrical, and sports engineering courses, as well as courses in information technology, building surveying and science. Bachelor of Engineering students undertake at least three months practical training as part of their degree. Many VU engineering courses contain a team-based Problem-Based Learning approach that uses real-life problems for teaching and learning.
  • The College of Education emphasises workplace learning in teacher and youth work education through its partnerships with schools, community organisations and industry, especially in Melbourne’s west. It is one of the few Australian universities to offer a Bachelor of Education (P-12) so graduates can teach at any level.
  • The College of Health and Biomedicine provides hands-on learning, teaching and research in nursing and midwifery, dermal therapies, osteopathy, beauty therapy, nutrition and paramedics. Learning in simulation labs and training clinics and salons is a compulsory part of most courses.
  • The College of Law and Justice provides education designed in consultation with legal professionals. The Victoria Law School operates from City Queen Campus in Melbourne’s legal district. Second and third-year students can participate in real cases at the Melbourne, Sunshine and Werribee Magistrates’ Courts.
  • The College of Sport and Exercise Science offers courses in aspects of sport, physical education, recreation management, coaching, and exercise science. The courses are based mainly at Footscray Park, site of the University’s new sport and learning precinct and its Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL).

Victoria University also delivers trades training. Its Trades College offers pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and traineeships in building and construction trades, engineering and machining, hospitality, hairdressing and make-up. Construction programs are based at VU's Sunshine Campus in an industry training facility opened in 2013.

  • VU College provides a range of student support programs for local and international students across all University colleges, including assistance with English language, literacy and numeracy. It also delivers nationally-accredited and customised courses, and career development services.

Famous quotes containing the word structure:

... the structure of our public morality crashed to earth. Above its grave a tombstone read, “Be tolerant—even of evil.” Logically the next step would be to say to our commonwealth’s criminals, “I disagree that it’s all right to rob and murder, but naturally I respect your opinion.” Tolerance is only complacence when it makes no distinction between right and wrong.
Sarah Patton Boyle, U.S. civil rights activist and author. The Desegregated Heart, part 2, ch. 2 (1962)
