Stonyhurst College - Scandal

Scandal

A former priest who taught at the school was jailed for sexually assaulting pupils between 1987 and 1995. The youngest victim was a boy of 12. In 1999, Lancashire Constabulary conducted Operation Whiting, which looked into allegations of abuse at the school dating back to the 1970s. This resulted in two convictions, one of which was quashed on appeal. On 14 May 2002, a parliamentary committee member described the operation as "a scandal in itself" and an "expensive... fiasco".

Famous quotes containing the word scandal:

Certain it is that scandal is good brisk talk, whereas praise of one’s neighbour is by no means lively hearing. An acquaintance grilled, scored, devilled, and served with mustard and cayenne pepper excites the appetite; whereas a slice of cold friend with currant jelly is but a sickly, unrelishing meat.
    William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863)

There’s no scandal like rags, nor any crime so shameful as poverty.
    George Farquhar (1678–1707)

Gossip isn’t scandal and it’s not merely malicious. It’s chatter about the human race by lovers of the same. Gossip is the tool of the poet, the shop-talk of the scientist, and the consolation of the housewife, wit, tycoon and intellectual. It begins in the nursery and ends when speech is past.
    Phyllis McGinley (1905–1978)
