Under the G.I. Bill in Minnesota, Fischer studied trumpet with Daniel Benner Tetzlaff, orchestration with William Muelbe (1888–1966) — both of the Minneapolis Symphony — tonal materials with Jack Nowiki (Paul Hindemith, Joseph Shillinger) and 20th Century Counterpoint with Earnst Kreneck.
