Steven Gilbar - Biography

Biography

Steven Gilbar was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1941, obtained a B.A. from the University of Michigan (1963) and a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School (1966). After practicing law in the Detroit area for several years, he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1970 and then, in 1978, to Santa Barbara. He is married to Inge Gatz, the social worker and community mental health activist, and has a son, Sky, a web developer.

He has worked as a managing editor of a law book publishing company and practiced law for many years, all the while editing and writing “shamelessly non-commercial” books. Since retiring from practice he has devoted most of his energy to mixed-media art.

He is the founder of Speaking of Stories, an award-winning Santa Barbara theater company that produces short-story readings on stage.

Famous quotes containing the word biography:

A biography is like a handshake down the years, that can become an arm-wrestle.
    Richard Holmes (b. 1945)

As we approached the log house,... the projecting ends of the logs lapping over each other irregularly several feet at the corners gave it a very rich and picturesque look, far removed from the meanness of weather-boards. It was a very spacious, low building, about eighty feet long, with many large apartments ... a style of architecture not described by Vitruvius, I suspect, though possibly hinted at in the biography of Orpheus.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The best part of a writer’s biography is not the record of his adventures but the story of his style.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
