Hofstetter grew up in the New York City borough of Queens, living at various times in Briarwood, Forest Hills and Rego Park.

Hofstetter graduated from the School of General Studies at Columbia University in the City of New York in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree . At Columbia, he wrote for the Columbia Spectator, and is a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity .

Hofstetter married his wife Sara in December, 2010 .
