Stanton Hall, also known as Belfast, is an Antebellum Classical Revival mansion in Natchez, Mississippi built during 1851-1857 for Frederick Stanton, a cotton broker. It occupies a full block on High Street between Pearl and Commerce Streets in Natchez and is operated as a historic house museum by the Pilgrimage Garden Club.
Reportedly, a chartered ship was used to transport the moldings, marble fireplace mantles, wrought ironwork, and other building materials and furnishings to the site from Europe. The house was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974 and a Mississippi Landmark in 1995.
The mansion is also available for rental for weddings and other special events.
The mansion serves as a design for Disneyland's Haunted Mansion.
Famous quotes containing the words stanton and/or hall:
“The girl must early be impressed with the idea that she is to be a hand, not a mouth; a worker, and not a drone, in the great hive of human activity. Like the boy, she must be taught to look forward to a life of self-dependence, and early prepare herself for some trade or profession.”
—Elizabeth Cady Stanton (18151902)
“While there we heard the Indian fire his gun twice.... This sudden, loud, crashing noise in the still aisles of the forest, affected me like an insult to nature, or ill manners at any rate, as if you were to fire a gun in a hall or temple.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
