Gold was a fund raiser and donor for Ehud Barak's successful campaign in the Israeli prime ministerial election, 1999.
Gold has been a contributor to federal political campaigns for many years, almost exclusively to Democrats, both candidates and organizations (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, Democratic National Committee) but also to a few Republicans (such as George W. Bush, Robert Dole, Richard Lugar, Mitt Romney, Arlen Specter, William Weld, Pete Wilson). (The Center for Responsive Politics reports $238,000 for 1993–17 Dec 2008, including a few non-federal contributions. See OpenSecrets.org)

Famous quotes containing the words philanthropy and/or service:
“Almost every man we meet requires some civility, requires to be humored; he has some fame, some talent, some whim of religion or philanthropy in his head that is not to be questioned, and which spoils all conversation with him. But a friend is a sane man who exercises not my ingenuity, but me.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“In public buildings set aside for the care and maintenance of the goods of the middle ages, a staff of civil service art attendants praise all the dead, irrelevant scribblings and scrawlings that, at best, have only historical interest for idiots and layabouts.”
—George Grosz (18931959)
