Stair Hole is a cove that is forming just to the west of Lulworth Cove in Dorset, southern England. In a few hundred thousand years it may be as large as nearby Lulworth Cove. The folded limestone strata known as the Lulworth crumple are particularly visible at Stair Hole. There are several caves visible from the seaward side of Stair Hole; Cathedral Cavern is supported by pillars of rock rising out of the water. It was created by an earthquake which pushed the rocks upwards creating the slanting effect.
Stair hole featured in the Play for Today Nuts in May, directed by Mike Leigh.
Famous quotes containing the words stair and/or hole:
“Life stood on the top stair a moment
Waved her last gray slander down the stair,
I will not forget her absent eyes
Her other smile like one rose
Falling, falling everywhere....”

“Give a beggar a dime and hell bless you. Give him a dollar and hell curse you for witholding the rest of your fortune. Poverty is a bag with a hole at the bottom.”
