St. Michael's Cave - Lower St. Michael's Cave

Lower St. Michael's Cave

In 1942, it was decided that an alternate entrance was required to improve air circulation within the emergency hospital, as well as to serve as an emergency exit in case of airstrike. Whilst blasting the rock in order to create an extra opening, another deeper system of caves known as Lower St. Michael's Cave (or New St. Michael's Cave) were discovered. The series of descending chambers are riddled with examples of almost all known cave formations, including a lake of crystal clear water.

Famous quotes containing the words michael and/or cave:

We’ve become a race of Peeping Toms. What people oughta do is get outside their own house and look in for a change.
    —John Michael Hayes (b. 1919)

The use of symbols has a certain power of emancipation and exhilaration for all men. We seem to be touched by a wand, which makes us dance and run about happily, like children. We are like persons who come out of a cave or cellar into the open air. This is the effect on us of tropes, fables, oracles, and all poetic forms. Poets are thus liberating gods.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
