St Luke's Hospital, Singapore - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

The SARS crisis in 2003 raised concerns of the potential of cross-institutional spread of the SARS virus due to the high volume of patient traffic between St Luke’s and the acute hospitals. A task force consisting of 2 senior doctors, 3 nurse manager, an infection control nurse was set up to deal with the SARS crisis. Isolation wards were set up and a contact tracing system was put in place in areas where there was high patient contact. A visitor screening point was also set up. Throughout the SARS crisis, St Luke’s continued to see an increase in referrals from acute hospitals. St Luke’s Hospital remained free of the SARS virus throughout the crisis.

Famous quotes containing the words severe, acute and/or syndrome:

One should not be too severe on English novels; they are the only relaxation of the intellectually unemployed.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

The spider-mind acquires a faculty of memory, and, with it, a singular skill of analysis and synthesis, taking apart and putting together in different relations the meshes of its trap. Man had in the beginning no power of analysis or synthesis approaching that of the spider, or even of the honey-bee; but he had acute sensibility to the higher forces.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

Women are taught that their main goal in life is to serve others—first men, and later, children. This prescription leads to enormous problems, for it is supposed to be carried out as if women did not have needs of their own, as if one could serve others without simultaneously attending to one’s own interests and desires. Carried to its “perfection,” it produces the martyr syndrome or the smothering wife and mother.
    Jean Baker Miller (20th century)
