St. John's School (Texas) - House System

House System

In 2011, St. John's adopted a House System whereby students would be sorted into "houses," much like in the Public school (United Kingdom). These houses would be named after six influential figures and institutions in the School's history. Siblings would always be in the same house. The houses as they stand today:

- Chidsey

- Winston

- Hoodwink

- Mulligan

- Claremont

- Taub

Chidsey was named after Alan Lake Chidsey, the founding father of St. John's. Winston was named after the Winston building on the Upper School Campus. Hoodwink was named after the now-demolished Hoodwink auditorium. Mulligan was named after fictional teacher Mrs. Mulligan. Claremont was named for the street St. John's School is located on.

Occasionally, Lower School will have house lunch days, in which they will all wear their house shirts and have lunch at designated tables (3 per house).

Famous quotes containing the words house and/or system:

Science is built up with facts, as a house is with stones. But a collection of facts is no more a science than a heap of stones is a house.
    Jules Henri Poincare (1854–1912)

Justice in the hands of the powerful is merely a governing system like any other. Why call it justice? Let us rather call it injustice, but of a sly effective order, based entirely on cruel knowledge of the resistance of the weak, their capacity for pain, humiliation and misery. Injustice sustained at the exact degree of necessary tension to turn the cogs of the huge machine-for- the-making-of-rich-men, without bursting the boiler.
    Georges Bernanos (1888–1948)
