Local Elections
The 1995 local election in St. George West was won by Ronald Edward Stone and John Edward Deasy, who were the Labour party candidates. In 1997, there was a 68.21% turnout for an election which was won by the Labour party. The Labour party has continued to win the local election in the ward, although in 2007 they achieved only 38.24% of the vote. This was less than 2% more than the Conservative Party candidate, who was in second place. More recently, in the 2008 by-election, after the death of the Labour candidate the Conservative party has attracted some controversy after replacing their previous candidate, Angelo Agathangelou, with Colin Bretherton.

Famous quotes containing the words local and/or elections:
“Eclecticism is the degree zero of contemporary general culture: one listens to reggae, watches a western, eats McDonalds food for lunch and local cuisine for dinner, wears Paris perfume in Tokyo and retro clothes in Hong Kong; knowledge is a matter for TV games. It is easy to find a public for eclectic works.”
—Jean François Lyotard (b. 1924)
“Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.”
—Gore Vidal (b. 1925)
