St. Georg, Hamburg - History

History

In 1410 the articles 17 and 18 of a contract (RezeƟ) between the Senate and the citizens were regulating the accommodation of the patients in the hospital St. Georg (S. Georg / Suente Juergens). This hospital still exists as the Asklepios Klinik St. Georg.

In 1868 the suburb St. Georg became official part of Hamburg, including the hospital for epidemic plague.

Due to the problems with drug abuse, prostitution and the high crime rate, in 2007 the Senate of Hamburg enforced a law to enact a ban of weapons on the area Hansaplatz of St. Georg. The only other place of Hamburg is the area Reeperbahn, St. Pauli.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Books of natural history aim commonly to be hasty schedules, or inventories of God’s property, by some clerk. They do not in the least teach the divine view of nature, but the popular view, or rather the popular method of studying nature, and make haste to conduct the persevering pupil only into that dilemma where the professors always dwell.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

To a surprising extent the war-lords in shining armour, the apostles of the martial virtues, tend not to die fighting when the time comes. History is full of ignominious getaways by the great and famous.
    George Orwell (1903–1950)

The history of persecution is a history of endeavors to cheat nature, to make water run up hill, to twist a rope of sand.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
