St Bride's Church - Modern Era

Modern Era

The church was designated a Grade I listed building on 4 January 1950.

In September 2007 the current vicar, Archdeacon the Venerable David Meara, announced a special appeal to raise 3.5 million GBP to preserve the church's unique heritage and on November 2007 The Queen was guest of honour at a service to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the restoration work necessary after the Second World War.

In March 2012 The Inspire! appeal was launched to raise the at least £2.5m ($3.9m) needed to repair the crumbling stonework of the church's famous spire.

The church has a place in sport, as the world table tennis men's singles champion is awarded the St. Bride vase. The tiered spire is said to have been the inspiration for the design of modern tiered wedding cakes.

Famous quotes containing the words modern and/or era:

All modern revolutions have ended in a reinforcement of the power of the state.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

...I had grown up in a world that was dominated by immature age. Not by vigorous immaturity, but by immaturity that was old and tired and prudent, that loved ritual and rubric, and was utterly wanting in curiosity about the new and the strange. Its era has passed away, and the world it made has crumbled around us. Its finest creation, a code of manners, has been ridiculed and discarded.
    Ellen Glasgow (1873–1945)
