St. Alphonsus' Church, Rectory, Convent and Halle

St. Alphonsus' Church, Rectory, Convent and Halle, also known as St John Neumann Shrine and "Baltimore's Powerhouse of Prayer," is a historic Roman Catholic church complex located in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The church is basically a large rectangular space with aisles and a nave of 50 feet in height, with Gothic detail. The ornate steeple is 210 feet tall and features a 3-stage bell tower topped with a 12 ft. gold cross. The Halle is a 4 1⁄2-story brick structure with a central pavilion topped by a gable. Both the three-story convent and the four-story rectory are brick. The complex was constructed between 1842 and 1845, by the Redemptorist Fathers. They were a German order of Roman Catholic priests who came to Baltimore to minister to the growing German immigrant community. Because of this it was once called "the German cathedral". Beginning in 1917, the church served as a parish for the Lithuanian immigrant community. The church also hosts a Tridentine Mass.

St. Alphonsus' Church, Rectory, Convent and Halle was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Famous quotes containing the word convent:

Come, all sad and solemn shows,
    That are quick-eyed Pleasure’s foes!
We convent nought else but woes,
We convent nought else but woes.
