Transportation

For many years, there has been no direct air link between the islands and mainland France. The new airport of Saint-Pierre, opened in 1999, was intended - in the minds of some people - to overcome this problem, but the situation remained unchanged. Air Saint-Pierreā€™s ATR 42 aircraft flies from the Canadian airports of Sydney (Summer seasonal), Stephenville (Summer seasonal), Halifax, Montreal and St John's all year round.

The islands are connected with the town of Fortune, Newfoundland, by two ferries which provide regular service all year. The ferries do not carry vehicles.
