Malaysia national badminton team has won 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals in badminton in Olympic Games since the sport was first introduced to the Olympics in 1992. In 1992 Razif Sidek and Jalani Sidek won the bronze medal in men's doubles. In 1996 Rashid Sidek won the bronze medal in men's singles and Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock won the silver medal. Lee Chong Wei won two silver medal each in 2008 and 2012.

Lee Chong Wei is currently ranked world number 1 in men's singles, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong ranked world number 2 in men's doubles and Chan Peng Soon & Goh Liu Ying ranked world number 3 in mixed doubles. The Malaysia badminton team is currently ranked world number 6 in world team ranking.

Malaysia won the Thomas Cup five times and became as the runner-up of Thomas Cup eight times. Malaysia also held its own international badminton tournament, the Malaysia Super Series that had been held annually since 1982.
