Sporothrix Schenckii - Diagnostic Tests

Diagnostic Tests

Sporothrix infection presents macroscopically with nonspecific symptoms. In the clinical laboratory, many fungi isolated in culture are disregarded as contaminants. Therefore, accurate patient histories are important to establish suspicion of sporotrichosis and to inform which diagnostic tests are required. S. schenckii infection may also be confused with other diseases such as pyoderma gangrenosum or sarcoidosis further underscoring the need for accurate diagnoses.

Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,
And sinks into my throat her tiger’s tooth,
Stealing my breath of life, I will confess
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth!
