Splendid Isolation - The Return of The Phrase in The 21st Century

The Return of The Phrase in The 21st Century

The phrase made a comeback in the British media in 2011, when UK Prime Minister David Cameron refused to back a deal to rescue the eurozone. The EU plan for the banks was aimed to solve the European sovereign-debt crisis, by amending the EU treaties, which included the EU financial transaction tax. It would have cost Britain an estimated £26 billion a year. The veto was welcomed by Conservative MPs who support the traditional Tory stance of “splendid isolation” in Europe, and advocate financial independence to regulate its own financial market.

Famous quotes containing the words return, phrase and/or century:

    Real kindness seeks no return;
    What return can the world make to rain clouds?
    Tiruvalluvar (c. 5th century A.D.)

    The wildest dreams of wild men, even, are not the less true, though they may not recommend themselves to the sense which is most common among Englishmen and Americans to-day. It is not every truth that recommends itself to the common sense. Nature has a place for the wild clematis as well as for the cabbage. Some expressions of truth are reminiscent,—others merely sensible, as the phrase is,—others prophetic.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    Those who give way to great anger are like the dead:
    Those who are free from anger are free from death.
    Tiruvalluvar (c. 5th century A.D.)
