Bauhaus covered "Spirit In the Sky" on their 1983 single "Sanity Assassin". In 1986 the group Doctor and the Medics reached #1 in the UK singles chart with their version of the song, while the same year punk band Fuzzbox released their own less successful version. A humorous version of the song recorded to raise money for the charity Comic Relief by The Kumars with Gareth Gates also reached #1 in 2003 becoming the third version of this song to top the UK singles chart.

"Spirit in the Sky" is featured on the video game Rock Band 2. The song was also remade by the Christian band Stellar Kart and debuted in their 2010 album, Everything Is Different Now. The Kentucky Headhunters recorded it, including it on their 1991 album, Electric Barnyard. The song was covered by DC Talk for Jesus: Music from & Inspired by the Epic Mini Series soundtrack and was released as a B side with LeAnn Rimes' song "I Need You".

Famous quotes containing the words cover and/or versions:

I wouldn’t pray just for a old man that’s dead because he’s all right. If I was to pray, I’d pray for the folks that’s alive and don’t know which way to turn. Grampa here, he ain’t got no more trouble like that. He’s got his job all cut out for him. So cover him up and let him get to it.
    Nunnally Johnson (1897–1977)

The assumption must be that those who can see value only in tradition, or versions of it, deny man’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
    Stephen Bayley (b. 1951)
