SpinRite is a computer software program for scanning magnetic data storage devices such as hard disks, recovering data from them and refreshing their surfaces. It is proprietary and commercial software written by Steve Gibson, founder of Gibson Research Corporation and co-host of the podcast Security Now on the TWiT network. The first version was released in 1988. Version 6.0, still current as of November 2012, was released in 2004. SpinRite may be run from a bootable floppy disk, USB flash drive or CD-ROM on a PC-compatible computer, independent of the operating system installed on the host computer.
