Definition
Specific relative angular momentum, represented by the symbol, is defined as the cross product of the relative position vector and the relative velocity vector .
where:
- is the relative orbital position vector
- is the relative orbital velocity vector
- is the total angular momentum of the system
- is the reduced mass
The units of are m2s−1.
For unperturbed orbits the vector is always perpendicular to the fixed orbital plane. However, for perturbed orbits the vector is generally not perpendicular to the osculating orbital plane
As usual in physics, the magnitude of the vector quantity is denoted by :

Famous quotes containing the word definition:
“The man who knows governments most completely is he who troubles himself least about a definition which shall give their essence. Enjoying an intimate acquaintance with all their particularities in turn, he would naturally regard an abstract conception in which these were unified as a thing more misleading than enlightening.”
—William James (18421910)
“Its a rare parent who can see his or her child clearly and objectively. At a school board meeting I attended . . . the only definition of a gifted child on which everyone in the audience could agree was mine.”
—Jane Adams (20th century)
“Was man made stupid to see his own stupidity?
Is God by definition indifferent, beyond us all?
Is the eternal truth mans fighting soul
Wherein the Beast ravens in its own avidity?”
—Richard Eberhart (b. 1904)
