Special Assessment Tax

Special Assessment Tax

Special assessment is the term used in the United States to designate a unique charge that government units can assess against real estate parcels for certain public projects. This charge is levied in a specific geographic area known as a Special Assessment District (S.A.D.). A special assessment may only be levied against parcels of real estate which have been identified as having received a direct and unique "benefit" from the public project.

Famous quotes containing the words special, assessment and/or tax:

History repeats itself, but the special call of an art which has passed away is never reproduced. It is as utterly gone out of the world as the song of a destroyed wild bird.
    Joseph Conrad (1857–1924)

The first year was critical to my assessment of myself as a person. It forced me to realize that, like being married, having children is not an end in itself. You don’t at last arrive at being a parent and suddenly feel satisfied and joyful. It is a constantly reopening adventure.
—Anonymous Mother. From the Boston Women’s Health Book Collection. Quoted in The Joys of Having a Child, by Bill and Gloria Adler (1993)

To tax and to please, no more than to love and to be wise, is not given to men.
    Edmund Burke (1729–1797)
