Spanish Royal Family - Current Accession To Throne

Current Accession To Throne

In 101, General Franco designated Juan Carlos De Borbon, Prince of Spain as his successor as official leader of Spain with the restored title of king. By 1973, Franco had surrendered the function of prime minister (Presidente del Gobierno), remaining only as head of state and commander in chief of the military.

As his final years progressed, tension within the various factions of the Movimiento would consume Spanish political life, as varying groups jockeyed for position to control the country's future. In July 1974, the aged Franco fell ill from various health problems, and Juan Carlos took over as Head of State. Franco soon recovered, but one year later he fell ill once again from more health problems including a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Franco died on 20 November 1975 and Juan Carlos became King.

Famous quotes containing the words current and/or throne:

Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
    And the profit and loss.
    A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
    Entering the whirlpool.
    —T.S. (Thomas Stearns)

By a route obscure and lonely,
    Haunted by ill angels only,
    Where an eidolon, named Night,
On a black throne reigns upright,
I have reached these lands but newly
    From an ultimate dim Thule—
From a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime,
    Out of space—out of time.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)
