Southington High School - Academics

Academics

Southington High School offers a hierarchical system with classes designed to suit student ability level. These courses are, College Prep, Competitive College Prep, and Honours level classes. Highly motivated students who have demonstrated strong learning abilities are encouraged to take upper division courses where they will be surrounded with a synergistic environment of similarly motivated students, whereas students who require more extended and detailed instructional time are encouraged to enroll in relatively lower course levels where teaching can be more individualized to their comfort level.

Faculty members are responsible for suggesting to each of their students the level of courses that would be most appropriate for that individual student next year; however, students are allowed to enroll in courses of any difficulty level with the written permission of their parents and an individual meeting with the student's guidance counselor.

Southington High School also offers a number of Advanced Placement courses as well as for-credit foreign language courses through the University of Connecticut's Early College Experience program.

Famous quotes containing the word academics:

Almost all scholarly research carries practical and political implications. Better that we should spell these out ourselves than leave that task to people with a vested interest in stressing only some of the implications and falsifying others. The idea that academics should remain “above the fray” only gives ideologues license to misuse our work.
    Stephanie Coontz (b. 1944)

Our first line of defense in raising children with values is modeling good behavior ourselves. This is critical. How will our kids learn tolerance for others if our hearts are filled with hate? Learn compassion if we are indifferent? Perceive academics as important if soccer practice is a higher priority than homework?
    Fred G. Gosman (20th century)
