The train was composed of stainless steel fluted stock built by Commonwealth Engineering Co. of NSW, under licence from Budd. Victoria and New South Wales provided joint funding for construction and maintenance.

From 1961 to 1963, a range of carriages were constructed for use on the Southern Aurora standard gauge services.

  • 2x Deluxe Twinette Sleepers, coded DAM 2333 and 2334.
  • 9x Twinette Sleepers, coded NAM 2335 through 2343. Additional cars NAM 2367 and 2368 were built for Spirit of Progress use. It is thought that car NAM 2373 was also used on the Southern Aurora.
  • 11x Roomette Sleepers, coded LAN 2344 through 2354. Car LAN 2372 was later built for the Brisbane Limited service, but with a Southern Aurora interior.
  • 3x Lounge cars, coded BCS 2355 to 2357. These cars were fitted with "Southern Aurora" nameboards on the sides.
  • 3x Dining cars, coded RMS 2358 to 2360
  • 3x Power vans, coded PHN 2361 to 2363. Additional cars PHN 2369 to 2371 were built for the Spirit of Progress.
  • 3x Luggage vans, coded MHN 2364 to 2366
