South Volcanic Zone - Volcanic Zones - Northern Volcanic Zone

Northern Volcanic Zone

The Northern Volcanic Zone (NVZ) extends from Colombia to Ecuador and includes all volcanoes on the continental mainland of these countries. Of the zone's volcanoes, 55 are located in Ecuador while 19 are in Colombia. In Ecuador the volcanoes are located in the Cordillera Occidental and Cordillera Real while in Colombia they are located in Cordillera Central. The volcanic arc has formed due to subduction of the Nazca Plate under western South America. Some volcanoes of the Northern Volcanic Zone, such as Galeras and Nevado del Ruiz that lie in densely populated highland areas, are major sources of hazards. It has been estimated that crustal thickness beneath this region varies from around 40 to perhaps more than 55 km. Sangay is the southernmost volcano of the Northern Volcanic Zone.

Famous quotes containing the words northern, volcanic and/or zone:

I have found that anything that comes out of the South is going to be called grotesque by the Northern reader, unless it is grotesque, in which case it is going to be called realistic.
    Flannery O’Connor (1925–1964)

Each of us, even the lowliest and most insignificant among us, was uprooted from his innermost existence by the almost constant volcanic upheavals visited upon our European soil and, as one of countless human beings, I can’t claim any special place for myself except that, as an Austrian, a Jew, writer, humanist and pacifist, I have always been precisely in those places where the effects of the thrusts were most violent.
    Stefan Zweig (18811942)

There was a continuous movement now, from Zone Five to Zone Four. And from Zone Four to Zone Three, and from us, up the pass. There was a lightness, a freshness, and an enquiry and a remaking and an inspiration where there had been only stagnation. And closed frontiers. For this is how we all see it now.
    Doris Lessing (b. 1919)
