Political Figures

The South Side has been home to some of the most significant figures in the history of American politics. These include the first African American U.S. President, Barack Obama; the first female African American U.S. Senator, Carol Moseley Braun; and the first African American presidential candidate to win a primary, Jesse Jackson. Before them, Harold Washington, a Congressman and the first African American Mayor of Chicago, as well as groundbreaking Congressman William L. Dawson, achieved political success from the South Side.

Famous quotes containing the words political and/or figures:

It’s not that we want the political jobs themselves ... but they seem to be the only language the men understand. We don’t really want these $200 a year jobs. But the average man doesn’t understand working for a cause.
    Jennie Carolyn Van Ness (b. c. 1890–?)

Families suffered badly under industrialization, but they survived, and the lives of men, women, and children improved. Children, once marginal and exploited figures, have moved to a position of greater protection and respect,... The historic decline in the overall death rates for children is an astonishing social fact, notwithstanding the disgraceful infant mortality figures for the poor and minorities. Like the decline in death from childbirth for women, this is a stunning achievement.
    Joseph Featherstone (20th century)
