South Portland High School

South Portland High School is a secondary school located in South Portland, Maine. The current building was erected in 1952, with a gymnasium added in 1958, an annex in 1962, and an auditorium and cafeteria in 1997. The building that had previously housed the high school became Mahoney Middle School. The current high school building is in poor repair, endangering the high school's accreditation. Famous quotes containing the words south, portland, high and/or school:

    Biography is a very definite region bounded on the north by history, on the south by fiction, on the east by obituary, and on the west by tedium.
    Philip Guedalla (1889–1944)

    It is said that a carpenter building a summer hotel here ... declared that one very clear day he picked out a ship coming into Portland Harbor and could distinctly see that its cargo was West Indian rum. A county historian avers that it was probably an optical delusion, the result of looking so often through a glass in common use in those days.
    —For the State of New Hampshire, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

    The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places how are the
    mighty fallen!
    Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon;
    Bible: Hebrew Second Samuel (l. I, 19–20)

    A school is not a factory. Its raison d’être is to provide opportunity for experience.
    —J.L. (James Lloyd)
