South Korean Football League System

The South Korean football league system contains three unconnected leagues for Korean football clubs. The Korean system is different from many other national league systems, in the sense that there is no official direct route for movement between any of the three divisions.

The highest level of football in South Korea is the K-League, the only fully professional football league in the country. Below the level of the K-League is the semi-professional National League, which serves as the second division. A third level is the amateur Challengers League, was added to the setup in 2007.

At present there is no avenue for progression between any of the leagues. In 2006 and 2007, the champions of the National League had been eligible for entry to the K-League provided they met certain criteria. Both Goyang Kookmin Bank and Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphin FC, who won the league in 2006 and 2007 respectively, refused the chance to move up to the K-League. In light of those rejections, the National League discontinued the conditional promotion system ahead of the 2008 season.

Famous quotes containing the words south, football, league and/or system:

Biography is a very definite region bounded on the north by history, on the south by fiction, on the east by obituary, and on the west by tedium.
    Philip Guedalla (1889–1944)

In this dream that dogs me I am part
Of a silent crowd walking under a wall,
Leaving a football match, perhaps, or a pit,
    All moving the same way.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

I am not impressed by the Ivy League establishments. Of course they graduate the best—it’s all they’ll take, leaving to others the problem of educating the country. They will give you an education the way the banks will give you money—provided you can prove to their satisfaction that you don’t need it.
    Peter De Vries (b. 1910)

Our system of government, in spite of Vietnam, Cambodia, CIA, Watergate, is still the best system of government on earth. And the greatest resource of all are the 215 million Americans who still have within us the strength, the character, the intelligence, the experience, the patriotism, the idealism, the compassion, the sense of brotherhood on which we can rely in the future to restore the greatness to our country.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
