The unrevised population of the province was 1,771,951 in the Indonesia 2000 census), increasing to 2,230,569 for the 2010 decennial census. The 2010 census recorded 1,120,225 males, and slightly less females. Kolaka, Muna and Konawe Selatan were the 3 most populous regencies.

Most of the population is centered on Buton Island off the south coast of Sulawesi, and in and around Kendari.
