SDHS is in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, in the Yadkin Valley 1-A Conference and has departments in Wrestling, soccer, basketball, American football, tennis, softball and baseball, track and field, cross country, and golf.

The South Davidson basketball teams have been very successful the past several years. The girls basketball team has a 34-21 record over the past two seasons, winning back to back Yadkin Valley Conference tournament championships. The girls have had 5 YVC All-Conference players, and 1 1A All-State player in 2 seasons. The girls made it to the 3rd round of the state playoffs in 2010-2011, and 2nd round in 2011-2012 season. The boys basketball team have had a lot of success the past couple seasons as well. With a record of 36-20 over the past 2 years. On December 21, 2010, the wildcats beat in county rival Central Davidson High School 70-69 in double overtime, this was the first time South had beaten Central in almost 20 years. The 2011-2012 season was the Wildcats most successful season in school history, breaking 5 school records (most points in a game: 113, most wins in a season: 24, most 90+ point games: 3, best field goal percentage in a game: 62%, furthest advancement in NCHSAA state playoffs: 3rd round). They won their 1st ever NewBridge Bank Christmas Classic over East Davidson High School 96-72, and having 3 players named to the All-Tournament Team. The wildcats also scored 113 points on Gray Stone Day School on January 17, 2012. The boys finished the 2011-2012 season #9 in the state in 1A. They have had 5 YVC All-Conference players in 2 years, and 1 1A All-State player.

The SDHS Cross Country Team won the state title in 2000. The SDHS Track and field 3200 meter relay team won the state title in 2001.

One famous person from SDHS (known then as Denton High School) was Max Lanier. Lanier played baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals from April 20, 1938 to July 4, 1953. He was 108-82, with a .196 slugging %.He had a 3.77 ERA all time.

South has inter-conference rivalries with North Moore High School and Chatham Central High School
