South African Barbarians - The Badge

The Badge

The badge is similar to the badge used by the Barbarians F.C. in 1929.

Many well known international players from other countries have represented the club including Hugo Porta(Arg), Jean-Pierre Rives (Fra), Tom Grace (Ire) and Fergus Slattery (Ire) - in fact, the 1992 SA Barbarian side that played against Transvaal featured Philippe Sella (Fra), Philippe Saint-André (Fra), Peter Winterbottom (Eng) and Willie Ofahengaue (Aus)

As with other "Barbarian " clubs internationally the club has struggled to get fixtures in the professional era although it hosted a touring Welsh XV in June 1993 when (despite the inclusion of nine Springboks and three Namibian internationals) Wales ran out comfortable winners, 56-17. The SA Barbarians subsequently toured to the UK later on in the same year.

Famous quotes containing the word badge:

It would much conduce to the public benefit, if, instead of discouraging free-thinking, there was erected in the midst of this free country a dianoetic academy, or seminary for free-thinkers, provided with retired chambers, and galleries, and shady walks and groves, where, after seven years spent in silence and meditation, a man might commence a genuine free-thinker, and from that time forward, have license to think what he pleased, and a badge to distinguish him from counterfeits.
    George Berkeley (1685–1753)

Signor Antonio, many a time and oft
In the Rialto you have rated me
About my moneys and my usances.
Still have I borne it with a patient shrug,
For sufferance is the badge of all our tribe.
You call me misbeliever, cutthroat dog,
And spit upon my Jewish gaberdine,
And all for use of that which is mine own.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
