Demography

Although the majority of South Africans who emigrate go to Australia and New Zealand, countries with which besides sharing cultural and linguistic heritage, they share a similar climate (the climate of Oceania is similar to South Africa), South African immigrants in United States are a relatively large number. Many whites South African, both before and after the end of apartheid, emigrated a to Midwestern states such as Minnesota and Illinois. Atlanta, Georgia, has a large population of South African Jews. Also, a number of South Africans have live in Mid-Atlantic states such as Maryland, and in New York.

Most South Africans in the United States are currently settled in San Diego, CA, at around 20,000 people. Now, the South African population in the U.S. has different origins. The majority of these are White South Africans English speaking, with a moderate proportion of these being South African Jews. The Black South Africans form a small minority in United States. So, of the more 40.000 South African American in the 2000 Census, the only black South African-American reported in the 2000 census, Zulu, was formed only by 509 people. In the western United States and in the Pacific Northwest, there only are small South African populations. The South Africans in general—both white and black— often live in the United States individually, so no big South African communities are often created in the United States. Now, the South African population in the U.S. has different origins.
