South African Airways Provincial Challenges

The South African cricket championship, the SuperSport Series, was remodelled in 2004-05 with six franchise teams competing. Two extra domestic competitions were introduced that are called the South African Airways Provincial Three-Day Challenge (first-class; originally the UCB Provincial Cup) and the South African Airways Provincial One-Day Challenge (limited overs; originally the UCB Provincial Shield) in which the eleven provincial teams still compete individually, as well as several minor provincial teams and non-South African teams from Namibia, and previously from Zimbabwe.

The Provincial Three-Day Challenge is a first-class championship for the provincial teams and so is effectively the descendant of the old Currie Cup. It was called the UCB Provincial Cup in 2004-05 and then its name was changed to South African Airways Provincial Three-Day Challenge. Winners have been:

Season Champion Runner-Up
2004-05 Griqualand West Border
2005-06 Northerns Western Province
2006-07 Gauteng Easterns
2007-08 Griqualand West Western Province
2008-09 Griqualand West North West
2009-10 Eastern Province Gauteng
2010-11 Western Province Gauteng
2011-12 Griqualand West Gauteng

Famous quotes containing the words south, african, provincial and/or challenges:

Biography is a very definite region bounded on the north by history, on the south by fiction, on the east by obituary, and on the west by tedium.
    Philip Guedalla (1889–1944)

Like dreaming, reading performs the prodigious task of carrying us off to other worlds. But reading is not dreaming because books, unlike dreams, are subject to our will: they envelop us in alternative realities only because we give them explicit permission to do so. Books are the dreams we would most like to have, and, like dreams, they have the power to change consciousness, turning sadness to laughter and anxious introspection to the relaxed contemplation of some other time and place.
Victor Null, South African educator, psychologist. Lost in a Book: The Psychology of Reading for Pleasure, introduction, Yale University Press (1988)

The dead level of provincial existence.
George Eliot [Mary Ann (or Marian)

A powerful idea communicates some of its strength to him who challenges it.
    Marcel Proust (1871–1922)
