SOS Outreach - History

History

In 1993, Arn Menconi founded SOS Outreach as the Snowboard Outreach Society in Colorado’s Vail Valley to improve the public perception of snowboarders. Snowboard Outreach Society organized snowboard races at Beaver Creek Ski Resort and donated the proceeds to local charities. When a teacher from Denver Public Schools contacted Arn about the interest some of her inner-city students had in trying snowboarding, Arn worked with management at Vail Resorts to bring a class of kids to Vail for their first introduction to snowsports. That was the beginning of helping youth from underprivileged backgrounds. Based on the principle of promoting character development and positive decision-making, SOS developed a multi-year, adventure-based youth development curriculum that soon grew to include other activities outside of snowboarding. In January 2009, SOS Outreach merged with Meet the Wilderness, to provide year-round programming to the at-risk youth it serves in Colorado.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

History takes time.... History makes memory.
    Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)

No matter how vital experience might be while you lived it, no sooner was it ended and dead than it became as lifeless as the piles of dry dust in a school history book.
    Ellen Glasgow (1874–1945)

I believe that in the history of art and of thought there has always been at every living moment of culture a “will to renewal.” This is not the prerogative of the last decade only. All history is nothing but a succession of “crises”Mof rupture, repudiation and resistance.... When there is no “crisis,” there is stagnation, petrification and death. All thought, all art is aggressive.
    Eugène Ionesco (b. 1912)
