They re-christened themselves S.O.M in 1993, taking their father's first name (Maxwell Carroll) .

In July 2009 the band became an international media sensation when they released the country-style song and music video "United Breaks Guitars," explaining how after United Airlines personnel damaged their musical instruments, the airline refused to take responsibility or give compensation for the loss.

The hostilities that arise over housework...are crushing the daughters of my generation....Change takes time, but men’s continued obliviousness to home responsibilities is causing women everywhere to expire of trivialities.
    Mary Kay Blakely (20th century)

For who shall defile the temples of the ancient gods, a cruel and violent death shall be his fate, and never shall his soul find rest unto eternity. Such is the curse of Amon-Ra, king of all the gods.
    Griffin Jay, Maxwell Shane (1905–1983)
