The argument in favor of solitary confinement for those not already sentenced to it is generally to ensure a prisoner’s protection. Earlier justifications for solitary confinement in the mid 20th century included protection for a prisoner whose sexual orientation, religion, or race were far too different and seen as vulnerable to attack from fellow inmates. This, in their opinion, justifies their actions of being put into solitary confinement.
