Not caring much to know, that still
Nor lead nor steel shall reach him,”

“The universal moments of child rearing are in fact nothing less than a confrontation with the most basic problems of living in society: a facing through ones children of all the conflicts inherent in human relationships, a clarification of issues that were unresolved in ones own growing up. The experience of child rearing not only can strengthen one as an individual but also presents the opportunity to shape human relationships of the future.”

“Ramses knelt beside Amon ... and He took one end of His skirt and wiped all that was black from the Gods face, kissing the God on the lips even though His own mouth blossomed at once into two great blisters which He wore in combat.”

“The force of truth that a statement imparts, then, its prominence among the hordes of recorded observations that I may optionally apply to my own life, depends, in addition to the sense that it is argumentatively defensible, on the sense that someone like me, and someone I like, whose voice is audible and who is at least notionally in the same room with me, does or can possibly hold it to be compellingly true.”
—Nicholson Baker (b. 1957)
“What I wanted was to create thoughtful citizenspeople who believed they could live interesting lives and be productive and socially useful. So I tried to create a community of children and adults where the adults shared and respected the childrens lives.”
—Deborah Meier (b. 1931)
