Solid-state Drive - Data Recovery and Secure Deletion

Data Recovery and Secure Deletion

Solid state drives have set new challenges for data recovery companies, as the way of storing data is much more non-linear and complex than that of hard disk drives. The strategy the drive operates by internally can largely vary between manufacturers and, the TRIM command zeroes the whole range of a deleted file. Wear leveling also means that the physical address of the data and the address exposed to the operating system are different.

As for secure deletion of data, using the ATA Secure Erase command is recommended, as the drive itself knows the most effective method to truly reset its data. A program such as Parted Magic can be used for this purpose.

Famous quotes containing the words data, recovery and/or secure:

This city is neither a jungle nor the moon.... In long shot: a cosmic smudge, a conglomerate of bleeding energies. Close up, it is a fairly legible printed circuit, a transistorized labyrinth of beastly tracks, a data bank for asthmatic voice-prints.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)

It’s even pleasant to be sick when you know that there are people who await your recovery as they might await a holiday.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

We shall make mistakes, but they must never be mistakes which result from faintness of heart or abandonment of moral principles. I remember that my old school master Dr. Peabody said in days that seemed to us then to be secure and untroubled, he said things in life will not always run smoothly, sometimes we will be rising toward the heights and all will seem to reverse itself and start downward. The great thing to remember is that the trend of civilization itself is forever upward.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
