Preparation
Sodium nitroprusside can be synthesized by boiling potassium ferrocyanide in concentrated nitric acid:
- K4 + 6 HNO3 → H2 + CO2 + NH4NO3 + 4 KNO3
- H2 + Na2CO3 → Na2 + CO2 + H2O
Or with nitrites:
- 4- + H2O + NO2- → 2- + CN- + 2 OH-
