Socialist Left (Australia) - Contemporary Left Faction

Contemporary Left Faction

The Left is the smaller of the two main factions in the federal Caucus. Under factional agreements, the Labor Leader in the Senate comes from the Left, their Deputy from the Right, ordinarily the reverse of the situation in the House of Representatives. Current Prime Minister Julia Gillard of the left is an historical exception. Key members of the Left include the former Minister for Defence, Senator John Faulkner, the Leader of the Government in the Senate Chris Evans, the Manager of Government Business in the House of Representatives Anthony Albanese, the Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin and the Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, Mark Butler.

Famous quotes containing the words contemporary, left and/or faction:

The attraction of horror is a mental, or even an intellectual, excitement, but the fascination of the repulsive, so noticeable in contemporary writing, can spring openly from some rotted substance within our civilization ...
    Ellen Glasgow (1873–1945)

Someone had literally run to earth
In an old cellar hole in a byroad
The origin of all the family there.
Thence they were sprung, so numerous a tribe
That now not all the houses left in town
Made shift to shelter them without the help
Of here and there a tent in grove and orchard.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

A state of war or anarchy, in which law has little force, is so far valuable, that it puts every man on trial. The man of principle is known as such, and even in the fury of faction is respected.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
