Mission
According to its Web site, the Social Science Research Council leads innovation, builds interdisciplinary and international networks, and focuses research on important public issues. It is guided by the belief that justice, prosperity, and democracy all require better understanding of complex social, cultural, economic, and political processes. Its key constituents comprise practitioners, policymakers, and academic researchers in all the social sciences, related professions, and the humanities and natural sciences. Its focus is worldwide, and its purpose is to mobilize existing knowledge for new problems, link research to practice and policy, strengthen individual and institutional capacities for learning, and enhance public access to information.

—Umberto Eco (b. 1932)
“Man is eminently a storyteller. His search for a purpose, a cause, an ideal, a mission and the like is largely a search for a plot and a pattern in the development of his life storya story that is basically without meaning or pattern.”
—Eric Hoffer (19021983)
