- The video game Mass Effect received an M-17 rating by the ESRB in large part for including characters wearing thongs.
- In 2006, sunbathers were threatened with a ban from wearing thongs in Paris Plage, a beach on the River Seine in France. Earlier, in October 2002, Florida officials banned thongs from Daytona and other public beaches.
