SMU School Of Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences (SOSS) is one of the six schools at the Singapore Management University (SMU). It offers the first multidisciplinary and liberal-arts based Bachelor of Social Science undergraduate degree programme in Singapore; students can choose to major in Political Science,Psychology or Sociology, as well as do a second major either from within SOSS or from one of the other five schools in SMU. SOSS has also begun offering three new second majors from August 2012 onward - Public Policy and Public Management (PPPM); International and Asian Studies (IAS); and Arts and Cultural Management (ACM).

SOSS represents one of the most tightly knit communities of social science students in Singapore, due to its collegial and cooperative learning environment, and has often been referred to informally as the "SOSS family".

SOSS has over the years become an increasingly popular choice for students looking for a interdisciplinary education in the social sciences and humanities; it welcomed over 220 freshmen in 2012, the largest intake it has seen since its inception.

SOSS graduates have fared well after entering the workforce, and are employed in a broad spectrum of organisations including the private sector, civil service, non-governmental organisations, and advocacy groups. According to information released by the Ministry of Education, Singapore, in 2011, SOSS graduates with a Cum Laude and above had a higher median gross monthly salary than their counterparts in other social sciences and humanities programmes in Singapore, and were on par with their counterparts from the SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business.

SOSS graduates have also done well in their post-graduate studies, and have been accepted in a wide range of Masters and PhD programmes in prestigious universities, including at the University of Oxford, Harvard University, London School of Economics, Erasmus University, Princeton University and Columbia University.

SOSS has also hosted distinguished academics such as Professor Ezra Vogel of Harvard University, Professor Elizabeth Perry of Harvard University, Professor John Ikenberry of Princeton University, and Professor Huang Yasheng of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, giving SOSS students the unique opportunity to tap the minds of these respected thinkers.

In 2012, SOSS organised the inaugural Social Sciences Conference for pre-university students in Singapore, where over 250 students from various junior colleges, polytechnics, and other pre-university institutions explored the social sciences with SOSS faculty. The keynote speech was delivered by Mr S R Nathan, the former President of Singapore.

If there is technological advance without social advance, there is, almost automatically, an increase in human misery, in impoverishment.
    Michael Harrington (1928–1989)

The well-educated young woman of 1950 will blend art and sciences in a way we do not dream of; the science will steady the art and the art will give charm to the science. This young woman will marry—yes, indeed, but she will take her pick of men, who will by that time have begun to realize what sort of men it behooves them to be.
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)
