Smoothing Spline - Related Methods

Related Methods

Smoothing splines are related to, but distinct from:

  • Regression splines. In this method, the data is fitted to a set of spline basis functions with a reduced set of knots, typically by least squares. No roughness penalty is used.
  • Penalized Splines. This combines the reduced knots of regression splines, with the roughness penalty of smoothing splines.
  • Elastic maps method for manifold learning. This method combines the least squares penalty for approximation error with the bending and stretching penalty of the approximating manifold and uses the coarse discretization of the optimization problem.

Famous quotes containing the words related and/or methods:

Becoming responsible adults is no longer a matter of whether children hang up their pajamas or put dirty towels in the hamper, but whether they care about themselves and others—and whether they see everyday chores as related to how we treat this planet.
    Eda Le Shan (20th century)

The philosopher is in advance of his age even in the outward form of his life. He is not fed, sheltered, clothed, warmed, like his contemporaries. How can a man be a philosopher and not maintain his vital heat by better methods than other men?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
