A particular brand of cigarettes in Japan costs the same across all vendors, from cigarette machines to big supermarkets to corner shops. Bulk purchases are not discounted. As of 1 October 2010, the price of a typical pack of cigarettes went up from 320 to 410 yen, in part because of a levy by the Japanese government of 3.5 yen per cigarette.
