Applications To Earth Sciences
Many networks studied in geology and geophysics have been shown to have characteristics of small-world networks. Networks defined in fracture systems and porous substances have demonstrated these characteristics. The seismic network in the Southern California region may be a small-world network. The examples above occur on very different spatial scales, demonstrating the scale invariance of the phenomenon in the earth sciences.

Famous quotes containing the words earth and/or sciences:
“Now listen, buddy, there are a few corny ideas you got to get out of your head if youre going to fly an airplane. Most things are just the reverse from what people think. The higher you are the safer you are. The Earth down there, that, thats your enemy because once you hit that, boy, you splatter.”
—Dalton Trumbo (19051976)
“I am not able to instruct you. I can only tell that I have chosen wrong. I have passed my time in study without experience; in the attainment of sciences which can, for the most part, be but remotely useful to mankind. I have purchased knowledge at the expense of all the common comforts of life: I have missed the endearing elegance of female friendship, and the happy commerce of domestic tenderness.”
—Samuel Johnson (17091784)
