Henry Sy bought a portion of the San Lazaro Hippodrome site which is 4 hectares of land. SM City San Lazaro's opening on July 2005 was led by SM founder, Henry Sy himself, and graced by then Manila Mayor Lito Atienza. The mall has a total floor area of 178,516 m2 (1,921,530 sq ft). It features anchors SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, SM Food Court, Story Land, SM Cinemas, Surplus Shop and features anchors like Ace Hardware, SM Appliance Center, Watsons, Factory Sale Outlet, National Bookstore, Super Bench and Bingo Gallery.
