Slipped Strand Mispairing - Evolution of Diverse Adjacent Repeats

Evolution of Diverse Adjacent Repeats

The combination of SSM events with point mutation is thought to account for the evolution of more complex repeat units. Mutations followed by expansion would result in the formation of new types of adjacent short tandem repeat units. For example, a transversion could change the simple two- base repeat 10 to 4GATA2. This could then be expanded to432 by two subsequent SSM events. Simple repetitive DNA sequences containing a variety of adjacent short tandem repeats are commonly observed in non-protein coding regions of eukaryotic genomes.

Famous quotes containing the words evolution of, evolution, diverse and/or repeats:

Analyze theory-building how we will, we all must start in the middle. Our conceptual firsts are middle-sized, middle-distanced objects, and our introduction to them and to everything comes midway in the cultural evolution of the race.
Willard Van Orman Quine (b. 1908)

What we think of as our sensitivity is only the higher evolution of terror in a poor dumb beast. We suffer for nothing. Our own death wish is our only real tragedy.
    Mario Puzo (b. 1920)

We are all patchwork, and so shapeless and diverse in composition that each bit, each moment, plays its own game.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)

Raising children is an incredibly hard and risky business in which no cumulative wisdom is gained: each generation repeats the mistakes the previous one made.
    Bill Cosby (20th century)
